Oda mon spotted during the Olympics Closing Ceremony...
It happened during the "We Remember" part of the Olympic Closing Ceremony, dedicated to the souls of the departed, when in the shots of the Nishimonai Bon Odori (西馬音内盆踊り) dance it was possible to spot the Oda mon over the stage of the musicians--

That is not the Oda crest, that is the shrine's crest. The five-petaled mokkou crest is used by almost any shrines that deify Susanoo.
ReplyDeleteWell. If you really must, it's possible that the Oda took their family crest from a Susanoo shrine's crest. The Inbe shrine priest ancestry theory, if you remember. Those priests had served at a Susanoo shrine.
To be honest, this is the first time I ever heard about such a thing... The Inbe mon was significative different too, as it was based on hemp.

I did not say the Inbe family crest. I said it was the crest of the shrine they used to serve for. Shrines that worship Susanoo and/or Gozu Tenno will often have a mokkou mon. You can probably just check any Shinto website for this.
DeleteAnyway, I just double-checked. I was actually wrong, so I apologize. It wasn't the shrine's crest. In the Nishimonai Bon Odori website, they describe the crest as "Onodera family crest".

Interesting! I wonder how they happened to get a mon which is identical to Nobu's... I imagined that at some point the two families got in a relationship (vassalage, marriage) but it doesn't seem like it's the case...
DeleteIt probably has nothing to do with the Oda family. The five-petaled mokkou is not unique to the ODa. As I mentioned above, the five-petaled mokkou is originally the shrine crest of shrines that worship Susanoo and Gozu Tenno. The clan ancestors probably worships Susanoo and took the shrine crest as their own.
DeleteSamurai "taking" shrine crests is something that happens every now and then. The Maeda plum crest is also originally the crest of Tenjin shrines. The Maeda took it because they respect the Tenjin.
